Taeawniya Adwal is a cooperative of women artists formed in 2007 to preserve the traditional weaving designs of the Eastern Middle Atlas region of Morocco. There are currently 13 active members of the Cooperative and 5 apprentices. The Cooperative provides training to weaving apprentices and needed income to women of Ribat El Kheir. All Cooperative members share in the proceeds from the sale of their weavings. For most of the members, this is their sole source of income and they are the only wage earners in their household.Historically Moroccan carpets were made by Berber tribes, most of which were semi-nomadic. The carpets were typically used as bedding or blankets and were made by the women for their own families. The weaving techniques and designs were passed on through generations of women. The weaver would draw from the vocabulary of designs particular to her tribe and work at her loom without a diagram or pattern to guide her. As a result, each rug is unique. The main design concept of Middle Atlas is based on a diamond grid. Weaving in Morocco has a very practical function, yet it is also a source of cultural pride for Moroccans.
The table runners made by the Cooperative for Wares Dinner are extraordinarily unique. These are patterned after the Berber rugs and are made of 100% cotton. Each runner has real metal sequins and the design was made specifically for Wares Dinner customers. You will not find these offered anywhere else in the world. The table runner is non-traditional given its heavy cotton weave, but it provides a beautiful table decoration and collectable piece of art. You may also choose to make a wall hanging from these runners.
